The name just came to my head. Well, since am new here I guess introductions are in order. I am Wesley Campbell, manga artist extraordinaire. I say extraordinaire because my manga work is exceptional. It might not be flawless becuase it is all done traditionally (with out any computer aide).

Let me cut to the chase. I am looking to form a team to submit work to Tokyopop. I think an entire team stands a better chance of getting work reviewed by Tokyopop than individually.

I have been drawing mangas for most of my life and it is nothing to me. Manga work comes easy to me as breathing and each day I am only becoming better. I have never officially working in the manga feild before but I have done some freelance manga work for an online "Secret of Mana" MMORPG. This is the start of a new year and I am determined to become a manga artist officially and have children imitate my art work.

There are samples of my work on deviant art for my personal manga project. S.A.H: Nightmares and Magic. http://nevilytis.deviantart.com/gallery/

Am looking for Inkers, Letters, Writers, and possible other artist to make a creative team.

Umm, might be easier (and you'd make more money) if you just settled for another artist. Jiggly and I are working on something for TP and even though I write and she draws I still contribute character design ideas as well as willing to help on any extra drawing that needs to be done (like toning, backgrounds, etc.)

Note: It's really just a proposal at the moment though. Embarassed
C'mon TP, I need a job that doesn't require over an hour of transit on Chicago trains... Crying or Very sad

That aside, it's best to have an idea of what ya wanna do before you go out and advertise. That way you can say "my story is awesome because it features shoujo ninjas and zombie ferrets. Here's a part of the script, anyone interested?" That way people know what they're getting into, and you have a better chance of someone going "ZOMG I lurve ZOMBIES! Let's werk 2gether forever!! <3 <3 <3!!!1!!one"

Or, you can go "Here's some of my artwork !" I enjoy drawing X, Y, and Z style comics. Anyone want to collaborate on a series with Z and Y? And maybe a little Z?

Much more user-friendly that way, and in the event no one can help you, they might know someone who likes X, Y, and Z and could refer you to them. Trust me, it's a lot more effective.

Introducing yourself as a manga artist extraordinaire screams unprofessional. I looked at your gallery and you're pretty good. (Get some real paper, please!)

As far as this call for collaborators, I'd say you should tell what kind of people you're looking to work with as well as what genre you're working on. That way, as ixis said, you'll either get the right people coming to you or get them to refer someone.

Well S-sama, I did say that my work is done completely traditional. The fact that you said am good is compliment enough for me (even with your sassy attitude).

Well, my main goal is to work on various manga projects (no mecha). I'd be willing to work on 22 pages with anyone. What am looking for is to break into the manga business but any means. The best way I know how to do this is finding other people that want to do the same thing.

Each month am willing to work on 22 pages of manga, each month a different theme. This can show the versitility of all invovled. I think many get rejected because they can only approach one theme but I believe if you bring your own style to whatever theme you tackle then your truely talented. That is what I want to do.

I dont know if you guys got the point of that but that's what am trying to do.

Well, I am pretty retarded, but let me see if I can understand what you're talking about...

You want to break into the "manga" industry through any means necessary, and by any means you mean: bashing your head against the wall again and again until Cadbury Eggs shoot out from your skull, hmm... Yes, I see. Making a 22 page manga over and over again every month and not doing anything with it is a great way to break into the business, those manga faries sure are tricky, always sneaking around and all.

It's not necessarily about bringing your own style, there's a lot more to making a great comic than that. There's the physical drawing talent on the artist, the skill of the writer. Is the story believable? What are you trying to say if anything at all? How do you expand the genre? Coming straight out and insulting people and making brash claims is not what you want to be doing, especially if you intend on manning this team of yours. No one will listen to you if right from the get-go you're being insulting (without warrant. Hey, I gotta save my own ass.)

And for the record, just because something's "traditional" doesn't mean it's good or bad, however... Let's take a look at your gallery...

Ok, right off the bat I see you're drawing out of a spiral art pad. If you want to make things easier for yourself (and if you really are "traditional") you'd be drawing on normal 14"x17" Bristol. This serves three purposes.

1.) Bristol is thicker and smoother than normal sketch pad paper, so you'll have less bleeding.
2.) Bristol is bigger (if you buy it that way) so you can scan and resize easier (though, looking at your devART site, scanning seems to be an irregular thing.)
3.) It's easier to scan paper without spirals or side frizzies getting in the way.

But of course, all that's trivial. Let's look at your art some more, shall we?

...

Well, you can draw figures pretty good (some inked lines would be great, or if you could control the pencil better, or just use the pencil as a tool to comvey lineweight and value with sketchiness.) In fact... I don't see any line weight at all... Not good my friend, simply not good.

Oh yeah, and where are the backgrounds? They like, disappear constantly. Not to mention overuse of face shots, overuse of swearing and pointless dialogue, overuse of strange action shots (one or two of them are pretty good though, just need more detail and y'know... Atmosphere and backgrounds so we know where the characters are.) Your layouts are all out of whack and very generic (and since you don't draw Dogby they have no relevant cohesion.)

Oh yeah, and a "ruler" really helps I hear. Perhaps you can figure out how to use one to draw straight lines. I'm pretty sure Akira Toriyama uses rulers. I know, he doesn't have to, probably a guilty pleasure, him drawing all "traditional" manga and all on Bristol with a ruler, tones, backgrounds, good dialogue, pacing, cohesion, believable characters... Anything I missed?

Yeah, drop the dissmisive attitude, learn the basics and come back ok? You have talent, but your superiority complex is holding you back.

I think it's post-samuraiism, like some ronin from out of nowhere saying, "I'm the strongest swordsman under the sun!"

Don't let your dreams get shot down here, but I think you gotta a little ways more to go. Some of your drawing are good, some are a little off, so just keep perfecting yourself.

Hmmmm. What you got a look at was my first short. I agree that it is generic and that it doesn't have an atmosphere. I am not going to justify myself because what everyone has said is correct -=shrugs=-. "Your greatest strength is also the greatest weakness".

As for my recent works "S.A.H.: Nightmares and Magic" I do use a rulers and less mindless chatter. In it I do focus more on setting the mood and atmosphere. It is not my intention to insult anyone or make anyone feel inferior. I just have confidence in my work and talent. I am willing to accept challenges and put myself on the line. If I am wrong for doing so then I guess I am wrong.

Apologies to those offended.

Ok, first off, GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE BUDDY! Your work has nothing amazing that someone else couldn't pull off. Your work may be above average, but it's NOT professional. You've got a long way to go before you can even claim that sort of title. And so far, besides a little handy work with a pencil, you've shown no other talent. And you need your own writer? Do you really think you even stand a chance if you need someone writing for you?

Second off, looking for a team online is a dumb idea. Yeah, I'll say it out straight, it's STUPID. There's more to a team of manga creators than just being together. They have to compliment each other's skills, know each other well, share a bond with each other, and share similar mind sets on what they want things to be like. If your team has too differing opinions and fancies, you're ultimatly going to end up fighting and squabling amongst each other as to what you want included. Megatokyo is a fine example. Both creators had differnet mindsets, and they ended up splitting in the end.

And another thing, "Manga" could only come to you as breathing if you live in Japan. You don't, and chances are high you never will. I know people swing the word around here a lot for stuff, but truely, REAL manga is made in Japan, by Japanese, FOR Japanese.

Bottom line, go back to where you came, and come back when you can either gain some humility, or actually have something that'll blow us away.

Look, just stop please.

Wesley has said his peace and offered apologies to any who he offended. I don't need people stirring up trouble after the fact.

Hmmm... what an unconventional introduction I had made as many have become violent towards my ambitions. So much chaos stirred amoungst those that have not tested my worth. I ask that no one judge me for the mere sake of joining in on what Ixis detailed explaination.

Ixis gave a full explaination for his words. He went through my work and criticed my flaws. For that i have the upmost respect for him but what is your justicfication Pinuyasha and others of the like mind? I think you simply followed the downwards spiral of the thread.

Hmmm, if my memory serves me correct manga art and anime was brough about by the love of characters such as bugs bunny and other Walt Disney characters. Mimicing the big eyes and such anime was born so if you add that to your history of anime then manga art is truely from the west. Besides, I never answered my location so for all your know I could be of Japanese decent.

The point is, please make your critizism more constructive instead of immature. I thank the defense of Pseudome and Ca_jas.

All right, I'm sorry.

I took a look at your artwork and it looks nice. You have some talent and I can tell that you've worked hard on it. I really have to agree with Ixis though.

First off I would suggest we jump off the "what is manga" debate as soon as possible. Simply put, you won't win, no one will win. I have the battle-scars to prove it (though, chicks dig scars.)

Umm... I know several artist from all fields (alternative, super-hero, OEL) that can do kick ass art but can't write as well. Also, there's no point in pointing out the flaws of someone else without a point. As Wesley said (kinda) you need to give a reason why someone needs work. Wesley does sound egotistical at first, but he acknowledges that and understands that his stuff could still use a little work. That said we can all put our guns down now, he's not a total clueless n00b as he first appeared to be. Cool

Tell that to, oh... 90% of creators who make comics today. Sure, most artist teams share common ground, which is why I suggested post your ideas and hopes on a project before asking for help, but most comics (by Marvel, DC, Image, etc) are written by someone and drawn by a completely different person. Very rarely do you find stories like Pseudome's where the artist and writer live together. You don't need some kind of synergy to work together, all you need is a writer's story and an artist who likes the script and is willing to draw it, that's all! In fact the less people adding their own individual ideas to the script the better (too many cooks spoil the broth. I think...)

Hey, his stuff is alright, and there's nothing wrong in asking for help, especially here. In fact, why the hell are you here if you think "manga" means it has to be "OMGJAPANESE"? You do know this is a site for Pseudome, a team that creates Van Von Hunter, a japanese influenced comic book/webcomic/cartoon right? Look, I don't need sidekicks right now ok? I do fine by myself.
