Hi all,

Tokyopop is having a portfolio review at their HQ. That's the first time I've noticed them scheduling a review at their headquarters because usually it's just at conventions.

From their website:

PORTFOLIO REVIEW AT TOKYOPOP HEADQUARTERS IN LOS ANGELES

Want to make manga and get it published by TOKYOPOP? Meet our editors at TOKYOPOP's Los Angeles headquarters and learn what they're looking for. Get your portfolios and your manga pitches together and bring them to 5900 Wilshire Blvd., 23rd floor, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Portfolio reviews will be happening from 2PM to 8PM on June 7, 2005. Get feedback from an editor about your art and story ideas. At 5PM, there will be a special presentation, How to Get Your Manga Published, followed by a Q&A session. Learn the best way to pitch, develop and publish your manga with TOKYOPOP.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone from the forum was planning on attending? If so, would someone be willing to take notes during the 5PM presentation and post the info on this forum? The reason is because unless I pull out a miracle from my magical hat, I won't be able to go. Other than the info posted on TP's Submissions page, it would interesting to know what they are currently looking for, tips on the best way to pitch, develop, and publish a manga with them.

Oooh, I shall have to mark that date, since I'm in the LA area and might be able to attend! Very Happy I'm not 100% sure though, since I *might* finally have an internship during then. (Is the 7th on a Thursday or Tuesday?)

But yeah, I'm going to mark that down, and try and go if I can. Smile

The 7th is a Tuesday. Please bring back some notes if you go, ok? Smile
Oh, if you go, you'll need a "Portfolio Review Form." You can download it on the Submissions page.

Awww, curses. If I get the internship, it'll be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Crying or Very sad

Then again, it's not like I'm going to get paid for working there, so I can probably fenangle (is that a word?) a day off in the interest of my career possibilities, especially if I do well my first month. *Is now nervous* Confused

*Goes to site to download submissions forms*

Is this on a walk in basis or can we make reservations?

I think it's a walk-in. Otherwise, they would have mentioned to make reservations.

No reservations necessary. Just bring your portfolio. If this event proves popular, we'll likely do more of them, so if you live in the L.A. area and have any interested in drawing manga, try to stop by. The portfolio reviews continue on into evening so people can hopefully make it even if they have work or school during the day.

Hope to see you there!

Hmm, does the building that Tokyopop's in have its own parking lot Cool or will we have to park on the street? Crying or Very sad I'm hoping for the parking lot.

Yes, some places do have parking lots if they're in a large building, but then some places don't. I know that TPOP is near Hancock Park (a rather large park), but I've never been there. I've only see them on a map and that's why I'm asking whether they have a parking lot. Who knows, it might be an underground parking lot.

The Tpop building does have an underground lot, but the building charges an arm and a leg to park there and I doubt Tpop will be validating parking for this. Metered street parking is easy enough to find, or one block south of the building you can usually find free street parking for up to 2 hours (just make sure to read signs).

That's what I like about motorcycles. If there's no parking near the building, I can just bring the bike inside with me, bring it up the elevator, whatever. Tile isn't very good for traction, though, so you gotta watch the turns in the hallway.

Wow, I'm glad I asked this question. Thanks for the info, Jake. I'm thinking the underground lot would be safer, but how much is an arm and a leg? $25? In my opinion $7 - $10 for a parking permit wouldn't be so bad if I could park in the underground lot for a day. It's better than running to the meter every 2 hours or so.

I've seen people bringing their bicycles in a building, but never have I heard of people bringing in their motorcycles and into elevators. Shocked Is that common where you live or do people stare at you? But that's indeed interesting! Surprised What a site that must be! Grabs lots of attention, huh? Cool

For all day parking, park across the street in the MOCA parking lot-- it's cheaper! (On weekdays, the Tpop building is hella 'spensive-- like $1.50 for 15 minutes/$25 max or something.)

I've been to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) once when I went on a field trip with my college art class in 2003, but the museum's address is 250 S. Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012. That's 6.8 miles (17 minutes driving time) away from Tokyopop. Shocked That doesn't sound across the street. Are we talking about the same thing? Confused

Let's see, another museum nearby is The Geffen Contemporary on 152 North Central Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90013, but that's also 17 minutes away from TPOP & it's closed until October 2005. The Museum of Neon Art is 501 W. Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90015, but that's 14 minutes away from TPOP. And the Walt Disney Concert Hall (in zip code 90012) parking garage is also 15 min away from TPOP.

So if the MOCA (On Grand) is what we're talking about, their parking lot either extends for miles or I'll have to walk for hours to get to TPOP if I decide to park in that parking lot. That can't be right. Crying or Very sad

Or maybe you mean The Pacific Design Center located, 8687 Melrose Ave, West Hollywood, CA 90069; that one takes 4 minutes driving time for 2.2 miles, but that still may take awhile to walk from. It seems all these museums are all considered MOCA: http://www.moca-la.org/museum/visit_home.php

I did a few more searches and found the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the American Quilt Research Center @ 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036. There's also Carole & Barry Kaye Museum of Minia @ 5900 Wilshire.
