I like the idea of "global manga" as mentioned in previous posts. "Amerimanga" is also nice term for American-made manga because it's like we've married the Japanese style, and are now becoming a mixed culture of its own. So maybe we should call it "mutt manga." Very Happy (Global Mutt style sounds good too.)

But also just "manga" is fine with me too. In my opinion, we shouldn't drop the term, "manga" just because our manga is made in America.

Here are some of the various suggestions I've seen so far:

"World Manga" - Seven Seas term
"Original Manga" - Generic Marketing term
"Sekai Manga" - AnimeonDVD thread (Sekai means World)
"Kokusai Manga" - AnimeonDVD thread (Kokusai means International)
"Gaijin Manga" - Segamu of Sokora Refugees' term
"Amalgamanga" - Pseudome Studio Forum
"Global Manga" - Pseudome Studio Forum
"Mutt Manga" - Joke from Pseudome Studio Forum
"McManga" - Joke from AnimeonDVD Forum

The more people discuss it, the more I just like plain 'ol "comics." Maybe instead of finding new terms, we should work on changing the meaning of our originals while accepting different classes within the broad generality?

Mmmhhhmm.

Yes. I like calling it plain old comics, if only to just get out of these debates about what is manga. The more people try to expand the definition of manga the more it just sounds like rationalizing or something. But, like I said before I really don't care what it is called, but enough people seem to have a problem with it that arguing that really doesn't mean a hell of a lot (to me) isn't worth energy. Besides, it's not like calling it a comic is mislabeling it or applying the wrong definition.

While I'm able to agree that it's all just comics at the end of the day, you have to keep in mind that for TOKYOPOP, Seven Seas, Antarctic Press, Archie Comics, etc. calling something manga means the difference in knowing a title will be sold in a bookstore and being direct market only.

So, fans are free to use thier definitions, but it's the companies and artists that should have the liberty of labeling their works.

So you see, Segamu of Sokora Refugees has a point when he says, "Neither side is right!"

Anyway, I've changed the title of this thread in hopes that the topic will finally die down.

You know, "World Manga" is probably the best place holder term...Since, as we all know Queenie Chan is an Aussie. Wink But the term just isn't snappy enough. It doesn't roll off the toung.

How about shortening it to "wanga"? I mean, heck, just turn the "w" upside down, and it becomes an "m". Wink

Er, wait. I think I detect a structural design flaw...You can't spell "wanga" without "wang". Eh, back to the drawing board. Very Happy

Personally, when I hear the term "comic", I automatically think of stand-up comedians and illustrated panels with characters doing a lot of silly and funny things. When there are books and mags that feature illustrated panels but have more action packed or dramatic stories printed within, calling it a "comic" seems wrong and out of place.

I think there ought to be another term for these kinds of illustrated stories if they're dealing with harder issues. Just labeling them as "comics" seems kind of demeaning... Sad

Watch out dude, you're about to get a big tongue-lashing from the "IT'S ALL JUST COMICS" crowd.

It's funny how others out there are arguing on "what's manga and what's not", and they want world peace!
