I'm noticing this wierd cycle with most artists, that they claim to feel most creative at night. I can't think of any physical reason why this is, but I know I always work best into the wee hours of the night and early hours of the morning. I feel more focused, calm, and creative.

There IS a sleep disorder called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome ( http://sleepdisorders.about.com/cs/dsps/a/nightowl.htm ) but I haven't found any information on whether or not people really are more creative at night or if it's all just in our heads. My only theory is that all artists are really vampires and have a natural hatred of the daylight hours . . . Instead of sucking blood, we suck ink.

Cool

Ironically, I feel the most creative in the morning...but it might be that, despite my best efforts, I'm a morning person. Laughing I generally find that I want to work more in the morning and kick back and relax after dinner. Although that could still be associated with sleep...I get some ideas from weird dreams I have, and the only ones I remember are right before I wake up.

Maybe I'm just an exception to the rule...most people I talk to seem to work better at night.

What I *am* wondering is if this is true for everyone: getting ideas in the shower! I often come up with my craziest and most creative ideas either while showering, or while eating. (Although the eating one works best when I can talk with other people about it.) Does the shower thing happen to other people, too?

Yep, Rivkah, same way with me. Although I find that while I'm most creative at night, I can draw detail and technical stuff more during the day. Reminds me of something I heard a while back, "the moon is the greatest patron of artists, writers, and poets..."

I agree with the shower thing too, although I think that it's probably that way because it's probably one of the few times of the day where we are forced to do nothing BUT shower. I mean, you can't shower and read/eat/study/etc at the same time. So your mind's pretty much free to wander =)

Yea...am sort of a nighthawk myself...though my work habits seem to varyT_O...sometimes I work best during the day, sometimes during the night....but NEVER early or first thing in the mornT_T;;; am NOT a morning person...and takes a bit for me to wake upXP

as for getting ideas while showering...all the time!^_^V...as well as when I'm in the bathroom....doing...other things>.>;;;;;;...but then there are those times where even if I'm simply walking up or down the stairs...sudden inspiration or ideas will hit^^;;...I just never know when the ideas will come....and it's mostly when I'm working on something else and can't take a sec to jot the ideas downXP

But lately...I've been in a creative rut....so...I've changed the materials I normally work, prismacolour markers, to something I've been meaning to get back to using, watercolours, and it seems some creativity has returned^^V...just hope it lasts>.>;;; course...could just be that I've a rather full plate of work in front of me at the moment^^;;;;oh well!

I missed posting here. XD;; *not sure what to do about the manga scene, wants to be a novelist more*

But...yes, I agree with both of the statements. I've had to do writing things for school ... and refused to start writing a story until 8 or 9 pm on a school night Laughing I love being awake during the night more because....there just isn't as much happening. Things that annoy you during life don't seem to get in the way of your writing/drawing ability then.

As for the shower bit...I've taken showers earlier than usual just because I wanted to figure out something for a story. XD;; I agree that there's not much to do in the shower besides..well..shower. o.o It's reflexive by now for people, so.. it's boring NOT to think.

Though....the story I've been molding around for the past couple years or so..the most important thing I've ever figured out for that story I figured out....while we were correcting algebra tests. o.o I didn't have to correct much, so I just zoned out and BAM. Idea. You learn all sorts of stuff in school. :3 *gets chucked at with rocks for being a highschooler*

Here's to unhealthy sleep schedules and accidently shaving our heads in the shower! Surprised

I don't know about daily cycles, except that I'm best when I'm not hungry or tired, especially the hungry part.

I dunno, I get some pretty stupid ideas when I'm tired, which usually wind up being the best ones. However, I don't draw very well when I'm tired.

Sometimes I think I have adult ADD because I have issues focusing on one thing for more than a few minutes, at which point I do something else to take a break and then totally forget what I was doing.

....like writing this post, which I began writing at least fifteen minutes ago and forgot I was writing it. X_x

It doesn't matter for me - I can draw pretty much whenever I sit down with a blank piece of paper. Is that odd?

Actually: GETTING myself to the desk is the hard part.

Yes, I definitely am more creative and inspired during the night! But I then at the same time I am too tired to do something about it, and in the morning it is all gone again. That is my cycle I guess lol. Btw, I have heard that people do their best thinking when they are eating. Pay attention next time you sit down for dinner, and see if it's true. ;P

That's kind of inappropriate for this forum and really has nothing to do with the thread. Show a bit of maturity, please.

I'm most creative or productive in the morning. It's the time I'm most focused. As the day progresses I grow more and more insane, that by the time night rolls around I'm this baboon climbing on the countertops throwing cans of spam at people while my feet make balloon animals for the children.

I also work better at night, probably because I'm usually the only one awake and don't have to constantly worry about interruptions.

When I'm actually motivated, I draw best at around 11am-2am. from about 2-3 AM, I come up with my best ideas for stuff... but I can't really do them. Drawing after 2 tends to llook like just a bunch of swiggles that merge together.

About the feeling more creative at night...well, when half of your head is in the clouds, it's pretty easy to be creative. That's my theory anyway.

I think I'm most creative probably between 10 PM and 5 AM. ^^ Within those hours, however, I do the best art between 10 PM and 2 AM.

EDIT- ah and the shower thing. I agree. Confused ish odd but...
